Interpreting the texts that are published in the volume The Railway as written by the outsiders who came to the post-Second World War Yugoslavia to take part in construction of the railway Šamac – Sarajevo (1947), but also to observe how it is organized, I compare the claims made in them about the Youth Voluntary Actions’ political, moral and educational significance, with the corresponding data in the field reports addressed to the youth organization. This comparison, which reveals that the British did not even mention the problems particularly pointed out by archival documents, though carried out in exemplary methodological fashion, does not, as it turned out, “finally reveal the truth” about the first post-war Youth Labour Actions. Instead, it points at pitfalls in the “adventure of interpretive reconstruction,” stemming from a misunderstanding of the broader context into which the venture settled.
